Hardwood Artistry – Borderline Perfection
Hardwood Floors, February/March 1995
In yet another marriage of craftsmanship and technology Schenck and Company Fine Wood Floors of Houston, Texas, combined a prefabricated parquet pattern with an on-site crafted border in this restoration of a water-damaged 300-square-foot residential dining room floor.
The damaged parquet floor was removed and replaced with a red oak Chaucer pattern, which was glued directly to the slab. The Buckingham style border was then cut and assembled at the job site to allow installers to adjust the dimensions of the border so that the pattern matched perfectly at the corner blocks.
“It may seem like a small detail,” says company president Greg Schenck, “but on a job like this, people expect perfection.”
The homeowner was involved in the design of the border and rosettes. Species included red oak, domestic walnut, jatoba (Brazilian cherry) and wenge.
